Our History

Notre Dame du Refuge RCA School, founded in 1858 by the religious congregation La Congrégation du Saint Esprit, holds a long-standing legacy of education, faith, and service. Initially a wooden structure with only five classrooms, the school grew over the decades to meet the needs of the local community. By 1890, a stone building was erected near the church and served not only as a school but also as a cyclone refuge for the village—earning the school its symbolic name.

From 1890 to 1949, the school was managed by nuns, before transitioning to lay leadership. After Cyclone Carol in 1960, a new building was constructed, and in 2000, all classes were relocated to a modern school block inaugurated on 7 September 2000. The school has since continued to evolve, with major upgrades including new sanitary blocks, a computer lab, solar panels (2013), digital tools, and an organic garden maintained by the pupils.

Over more than 160 years, Notre Dame du Refuge RCA has remained faithful to its mission: to offer a nurturing, inclusive, and value-driven education to children from diverse cultural and religious backgrounds, while fostering their holistic development.
